This work made me think about new ways that ideas and elements can coexist in a more natural way without them overloading the image. I had the pleasure to work with the Collection Spaarnestad at the National Archive, which made me think of the hundreds of containers of information and pictures from all over the world. All these different sources living together and being organized in boxes, I wanted to create a more natural setting for them. Especially considering how information now travels through the internet in a nearly organic or animalistic way.

I happened to find “The Book of Perspective”, (1604-1605) by Hans Vredeman de Vries, which inspired me to use the geometrical square grids. I thought the grids were extremely effective in creating space, and containing all the information. I decided to have fun with the lines and not get ruled by a mathematical approach, which was interesting because the lines were also becoming a new element of the composition, that are as important as the rest of the objects and creatures.

The different objects rule the space’s dynamics, the salmon pink lines accentuate this informational exchange while still giving the illusion that anything can happen and will happen. The room’s different shapes and light elements play as characters as well, while still keeping their material and visual qualities. Everything is collectively shaping the dialogue, while also leaving the interpretation to intuition. The central image of the man throwing the dart at the painting is also of large importance for keeping together the dialogue, since it brings together a power dynamic, that resembles that of a guidance, which allows for the painting to be directed at the right rhythm, while still not overthrowing the rest. The eye is then guided by the warped perspective of the room, accentuated by dark and light which obey the colors and juxtaposition.

Ultimately it is the realm of the mind, a neo-metaphysical approach to painting and representation of an naturally unnatural scene.
